LGBTea You Missed Last Week
Hello fellow queers! This is our very first Gay Things You Missed Last Week. We’ll be updating this column weekly with breaking news and pop culture related to the LGBTQ community.
Without further ado, here’s what you missed last week:
1. We Got Our First LGBTQ Pixar Character
Disney is finally putting some big dollars behind representation of the queer community with its animated lesbian character Officer Spector, voiced by actual human lesbian Lena Waithe. This is especially huge news because Pixar is famous for making family films--and now LGBTQ families are being recognized as a part of that audience. I can’t imagine what it would have been like for me as a closeted babygay to see an out lesbian character on my favorite animated movie! So yes, while I agree that the Cycop is an ugly choice, I’m thankful that this representation exists at all. Sometimes there’s a tendency to tear things down because they’re not this or that enough, but I’m gonna take my W when I can. Progress is not linear! And apparently, not cute either :-/
2. BYU Homosexual Ban
Brigham Young University, famously the biggest Mormon university in the entire world, just announced that the ban on “all forms of physical intimacy that gives expression to homosexual feelings” has been dropped from their official Honor Code. We know there are so many queer Mormons out there celebrating their truths and we’re here for it! Congrats to BYU’s queer community for doing the hard work.
Unfortunately, we must note that because the University is coming under fire for this decision, their official position as of today is that this has been a “miscommunication.” We’ll keep y’all posted if anything changes, but for now this is a cause for celebration for LGBTQ Mormons and BYU students.
3. Pete and Amy go to blows
Our fellow gay Pete Buttigieg had some major drama with Amy Klobuchar at the debate in Las Vegas. Pete and Amy have a long history of going at it, but it seemed to reach a new height last week when she even denied him a farewell handshake. Damn, Amy.
Oh also, we should mention #BeardedButtigieg for the fellas.
4. Westworld Trailer Release
A new trailer for season 3 of Westworld dropped last week and with it came a fiery bisexual Evan Rachel Wood making eyes and cuddling with our fave, Tessa Thompson. We’re gonna watch if for nothing else but the major guaranteed eye candy.
